California – Cool air lingers just long enough to fog the breath this morning before sunshine quickly takes control across San Diego County. Clear skies and calm winds set the stage for a sharp temperature swing that will feel more like spring by midday.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures rise rapidly after sunrise, climbing from the upper 40s early to the low 70s this afternoon across inland and coastal neighborhoods. Downtown San Diego, Mission Valley, and Chula Vista all see mild, sunny conditions, while beaches stay slightly cooler under a light onshore breeze.

The warm-up brings ideal outdoor weather, but it also introduces a familiar wintertime concern later tonight. As temperatures cool back into the low 50s, patchy fog develops, especially near the coast and in low-lying valleys. Reduced visibility is possible along I-5, I-8, and surface streets near San Diego Bay. Drivers heading out late should stay alert for sudden visibility drops.

Tuesday follows a similar pattern with mostly sunny skies and another push into the low 70s. By Wednesday, changes begin to show. Clouds increase, highs ease back into the upper 60s, and nighttime fog becomes more widespread. To be fair, conditions remain dry, but the air feels noticeably cooler during the mornings.

This calm stretch reflects a broader West Coast pattern. High pressure keeps Southern California warm and dry while colder air grips much of the central and eastern U.S. Looking farther ahead, long-range outlooks suggest temperatures stay above normal locally into late January.

For now, plan layers for the morning chill, sunglasses for the afternoon sun, and caution on fog-prone roads after dark.
