Eureka, California, kicks off the morning with overcast skies, as heavy rain begins to pour down. The Pacific storm system pushing through northern California is causing widespread rain and is expected to continue through Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the area, with additional rainfall possible throughout the weekend.

Rain began overnight, and it will only intensify as Sunday moves forward. By late this afternoon, rain totals could approach half an inch, with even more expected Monday. Travel could be tricky, especially on I-5 and other north-south highways, where slick roads and reduced visibility from the rain will make driving hazardous. Commuters should plan for extra time, especially with wind gusts expected to hit 25-35 mph, possibly knocking over tree limbs and debris onto roads.

The rain will continue Monday into Tuesday, reaching over an inch by the time it’s all said and done. As a result, flash flooding and pooling water are concerns in low-lying areas, particularly near rivers. This persistent weather will impact holiday travel, especially for those heading up or down the coast.

Tuesday night into Wednesday, the rain is expected to taper off, but the wet weather will likely linger in the form of showers before it fully clears up by Thursday. Although temperatures will remain mild, hovering in the mid-50s, wet roads will remain an issue, especially during the evening hours when temperatures dip and roads can freeze.
