California – A hazy, muted skyline greets much of Southern California this morning as stagnant air traps pollution near the ground. The breeze feels absent, and the air carries a heavier, less breathable edge across the Los Angeles Basin.

According to the South Coast Air Quality Management District, a mandatory Air Quality Alert and wood-burning ban is in effect for today. The No-Burn rule applies across Los Angeles County, including downtown Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita Valley, coastal communities, and inland valleys. Burning wood, pellets, or manufactured fire logs is prohibited in both indoor and outdoor fireplaces.

Conditions favor the buildup of fine particle pollution, which can penetrate deep into the lungs. Health officials warn that people with asthma, heart disease, children, and older adults face the highest risk. Emergency room visits often rise during similar events, especially when smoke and stagnant air combine.

Weather conditions contribute to the problem. Light winds and a shallow marine layer prevent pollutants from dispersing. Cloud cover lingers through much of the day, keeping temperatures mild but limiting atmospheric mixing. Highs reach the mid-60s across Los Angeles, Pasadena, Glendale, and Beverly Hills.

A slight chance of light rain develops later today, but rainfall remains limited and may not improve air quality significantly. Tonight stays mostly cloudy with lows near 51 degrees, allowing pollution to linger into the next morning.

Friday brings gradual improvement. Morning fog clears faster, sunshine increases, and highs climb back into the mid-60s. Better airflow helps disperse pollutants by afternoon. The weekend turns warmer and clearer, with sunny skies and highs nearing 69 degrees Saturday and Sunday.

Early next week stays mild, with morning fog returning at times but overall improving air conditions. Residents are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activity today, keep windows closed, and use air purifiers if available.
