California’s coastline is turning restless this morning, with long-period swells building and waves crashing higher along northwest-facing beaches. By late tonight, breakers could reach 14 to 19 feet, creating a serious rip current risk from Ocean Beach to Point Reyes.

According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from 10 p.m. tonight through 4 a.m. Sunday. Forecasters warn of sneaker waves and dangerous surf capable of sweeping people off jetties and rocks. Officials urge residents to stay off piers and keep a safe distance from the shoreline.

Rain chances also climb through the day. Skies stay mostly cloudy with highs near 59 degrees. Showers increase Sunday afternoon, with up to a quarter inch possible by evening. By Sunday night into Monday, rain becomes steady, and totals between a quarter and half inch are likely across San Francisco.

Plan extra time if driving across the Golden Gate Bridge or along Highway 1. Wet pavement and gusty south winds could slow traffic, especially after sunset Sunday. Keep headlights on and avoid flooded low spots.

Temperatures cool slightly into the mid-50s Monday and Tuesday with periods of rain lingering. By midweek, showers taper and partial clearing returns. Looking ahead into late next week, above-normal February temperatures hint at early spring vibes across California, with milder afternoons building into President’s Day Week.
