SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The calm before the storm is fading fast across the Bay Area this morning. Low clouds hug the hills, the air feels damp and still — a sure sign of a changing pattern that will bring strong winds, pounding surf, and the Bay’s first widespread heavy rain in weeks.

According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, multiple advisories are now in effect. A Wind Advisory begins late Tuesday night through Wednesday, warning of gusts up to 45 mph along coastal ridges and bridges, including the Golden Gate and Bay Bridge corridors. A Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory are also active, with waves up to 20 feet and tide surges expected Tuesday morning through Wednesday afternoon.

Residents near San Francisco, Marin, and Monterey counties should prepare for coastal flooding, slippery commutes, and minor power outages as the Pacific storm strengthens midweek. Drivers on U.S. 101, I-80, and Highway 1 should expect reduced visibility and gusty crosswinds from Tuesday evening through early Wednesday.

While rainfall totals will vary, forecasters expect a half-inch to one inch across the city, with heavier pockets in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The system clears by Thursday, but more moisture could arrive over the weekend.

For now, secure outdoor items, avoid flooded roads, and stay away from breaking surf — sneaker waves and high tides can sweep farther inland than expected. The next 48 hours will mark the Bay Area’s first true taste of late-fall storm season.
