Las Vegas, NV – Snow returns to the high elevations of eastern California early Monday, with a prolonged stretch of winter weather expected to make travel difficult across the Eastern Sierra and Inyo Mountains. The storm will bring accumulating snow through Tuesday morning, affecting both commuters and backcountry travelers.

According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 4 a.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday for the Eastern Sierra Slopes and the White Mountains of Inyo County, including Whitney Portal, Aspendell, Bristlecone Pine, and Westgard Pass.

Forecasters expect 2 to 5 inches of snow above 6,000 feet, with heavier totals of 5 to 10 inches above 9,000 feet. The storm will move in before daybreak Monday, bringing steady snow throughout the day and into early Tuesday. Higher peaks and exposed slopes may see the most significant accumulation.

According to the NWS, slippery roads are likely, especially along State Route 168 to Aspendell, where elevation rises quickly and snow tends to accumulate rapidly. Reduced visibility may create added challenges for early-week travelers heading into the mountains for work, recreation, or hunting.

Conditions are expected to remain unsettled through Tuesday morning, with cold temperatures allowing snow to stick on shaded roadways and high-elevation passes.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use caution, and check road information by calling 1-800-427-7623 before heading out. Those entering backcountry areas should be prepared for changing conditions.

If you’re planning to travel SR-168, how will this storm affect your morning route?
