Sacramento, CA – A fast-moving winter storm is creating hazardous morning travel across the central Sierra Nevada today, with heavy snow and strong winds expected to continue through late morning.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. PST for elevations above 8,000 feet across Yosemite National Park (outside the valley), Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon, the Grant Grove area, and the high terrain from the Upper San Joaquin River to the south end of the upper Sierra.
Forecasters report that 6 to 12 inches of snow are likely above 8,000 feet, with up to 18 inches possible at the highest elevations near Tuolumne Meadows, Florence Lake, Huntington Lake, and Shaver Lake. According to meteorologists, winds could gust as high as 40 mph, creating blowing snow and sudden drops in visibility.
The storm is expected to impact the Friday morning commute, especially on mountain roads, bridges, and overpasses. Forecasters say roads will likely become slick and icy, and travel could be very difficult, particularly in remote or steep terrain.
Officials advise residents and visitors to delay travel if possible. Those who must be on the road early today should drive with extreme caution, allow extra travel time, and prepare for sudden weather changes. Emergency supplies—including water, food, and a flashlight—are recommended for anyone traveling through the Sierra. Road condition updates are available by dialing 511.
