California — Sheets of rain streak across windows this morning as wind rattles loose debris and low clouds swallow the skyline. The Bay Area is entering a prolonged stretch of dangerous weather, with flooding risks rising quickly ahead of post-Christmas travel.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Friday evening for San Francisco, the Peninsula, East Bay, North Bay, and Central Coast. Multiple rounds of rain arrive as a series of atmospheric rivers push ashore. Widespread totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with 4 to 6 inches possible in the Santa Cruz Mountains and locally higher amounts along coastal hills.

Road impacts are likely. Poor drainage areas may flood, and creeks could spill over banks. Low-water crossings may become impassable. Drivers should expect standing water on I-80, U.S. 101, Highway 1, and city arterials during heavier rain bands.

A Wind Advisory adds another layer of concern. Southeast winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching 55 mph, are expected across coastal and interior valleys. Stronger gusts may hit ridgelines. Tree damage and isolated power outages are possible, and travel will be difficult for high-profile vehicles.

Beach hazards also remain elevated. Large breaking waves and blowing sand reduce visibility along the coast. Officials urge residents to avoid exposed shorelines and jetties.

Rain intensity peaks midweek, then continues through Christmas Day with little break. By Friday, showers persist as travel volume increases. While temperatures stay mild in the mid to upper 50s, saturated ground keeps flooding risks high.

Plan extra travel time and avoid flooded roadways. Secure loose outdoor items now and stay alert for rapid changes.
