California — Mist hangs low over streets and rooftops this morning as damp pavement reflects traffic lights across San Diego. The calm feel won’t last. A potent Pacific storm is lining up to bring heavy rain, strong winds, and dangerous surf through midweek, just ahead of post-Christmas travel.
According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, a Flood Watch is in effect through late Wednesday night for coastal areas, valleys, mountains, and deserts. Widespread rain develops later today and intensifies Wednesday. Rainfall rates may reach half an inch to one inch per hour at times, especially during heavier bands.
Flooding impacts could escalate quickly. Excessive runoff may flood streets, creeks, and low-lying areas across San Diego County. Urban flooding is possible in poor drainage locations, while fast rises are expected along small streams. Drivers should watch for standing water on I-5, I-8, I-15, and surface roads during peak rainfall.
Wind adds another concern. A Wind Advisory remains in effect Wednesday, with south winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts near 40 mph. Gusty conditions may knock down tree limbs and make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles, especially during heavier rain.
Along the coast, a High Surf Advisory remains in effect into Saturday. Waves of 5 to 8 feet, with occasional sets near 9 feet, will pound south-facing beaches. Coastal flooding and minor tidal overflow are possible during high tides, especially near beach access points and parking areas.
Rain lingers into Christmas Day with showers tapering at times. By Friday, showers continue with highs near the low 60s. Saturated ground keeps flooding concerns elevated for those returning home after the holiday.
Plan extra travel time, avoid flooded roads, and stay clear of beaches and jetties during high surf.
