California — Early sunlight glints off the San Diego waterfront this morning while patchy coastal fog slowly lifts. The calm start will not last long. Temperatures climb quickly today as a powerful ridge of high pressure spreads across Southern California, pushing an unusual March heat event into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, a Heat Advisory begins at 10 a.m. and remains in effect through 8 p.m. Friday across San Diego County valleys, the Inland Empire, and parts of Orange County. Inland communities could see mid-90s to near 102°F, especially by midweek as the warm spell peaks.
Closer to the coast, temperatures rise more gradually. Downtown San Diego climbs toward 79°F today, with patchy fog clearing by mid-morning. Coastal areas including La Jolla, Oceanside, and Coronado remain cooler due to marine air, but sunshine will still push temperatures into the upper 70s and low 80s.
The heat becomes more noticeable Tuesday and Wednesday. Inland communities such as El Cajon, Escondido, Chula Vista, and Riverside will experience the strongest warming. Afternoon temperatures may approach the upper 90s, with some valleys flirting with the 100-degree mark during the warmest hours.
Drivers traveling along Interstate 5, Interstate 8, and Interstate 15 will likely notice shimmering heat rising off the pavement during peak afternoon sunshine. Outdoor workers and hikers should plan breaks and carry water as conditions warm quickly.
Beach conditions carry another concern. A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Wednesday evening, with surf between 2 and 4 feet and occasional sets near 5 feet. Officials warn that moderate rip current risks could make swimming dangerous along portions of the San Diego and Orange County coastline.
Stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and limit strenuous activity during the afternoon heat. Meteorologists say the warming trend will likely continue into late week as high pressure remains anchored over the West.
