California’s coastline starts Monday under thick clouds as light showers speckle windshields and waves pound local beaches. In San Diego, damp roads and unsettled skies greet commuters and students returning to school for the first Monday of 2026.

According to the National Weather Service, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through mid-morning as scattered showers move across the region. Rain chances sit near 30 percent early, with precipitation amounts staying light but enough to keep pavement slick. South winds increase slightly, adding to choppy surf conditions along the coast.

Across San Diego County, showers linger through the morning hours before gradually tapering. Highs reach near 64 degrees by afternoon as clouds thin. Drivers should remain cautious on Interstate 5, Highway 163, and coastal surface streets where spray and brief downpours reduce visibility. Plan extra time during pickups and drop-offs, especially near beach communities.

Conditions improve Monday night with clouds holding but rain easing. Tuesday brings a noticeable change. Skies turn partly sunny, highs climb into the mid-60s, and winds stay light. A slight chance of showers returns Tuesday night, though impacts remain limited.

By Wednesday, winter calms down. Sunshine mixes with passing clouds, temperatures hold near 65 degrees, and travel conditions improve across the region. Thursday and Friday continue the drying trend with mostly sunny afternoons and cooler nights dipping into the upper 40s. Freezing temperatures are not expected locally, but damp morning air can still create slick spots in shaded areas.

Meteorologists continue watching active weather patterns elsewhere in the West, though Southern California settles into a quieter stretch. With daylight steadily increasing by late January, afternoons will feel brighter heading toward the weekend.
