California streets glisten under steady rain Monday morning as umbrellas tilt into gusty winds and runoff pools along curbs. In San Francisco, wet pavement and reduced visibility shape the first school and work commute of 2026, with conditions changing through the day.

According to the National Weather Service, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect through Monday afternoon as Pacific moisture continues to move inland. Rainfall totals range from a tenth to a quarter inch, with locally higher amounts possible. South to southeast winds increase, with gusts reaching near 25 mph by late morning.

Across the Bay Area, showers remain widespread today, keeping highs near 57 degrees. Drivers should expect slick roads on Highway 101, I-80 approaches, and surface streets near the waterfront. Allow extra time, especially during peak pickup and drop-off hours as children return to school after the holiday break.

Rain continues into Monday night before gradually tapering. Conditions improve Tuesday as clouds break and skies turn partly sunny. Highs rebound to the upper 50s, offering a noticeable shift after the gray start. By Wednesday, sunshine becomes more dominant, and dry air settles in, helping roads fully dry during the afternoons.

Looking ahead, winter stays mild. Overnight temperatures dip into the mid-40s later this week but remain well above freezing. That limits frost concerns locally, though early-morning moisture can still create slick patches in shaded areas. Daylight also continues to grow, with nearly 40 extra minutes of evening light expected by late January.

Meteorologists continue tracking additional Pacific systems later this month, but for now, a calmer pattern takes hold after today’s rain. If you’re traveling this morning, slow down on wet roads and watch for ponding near coastal routes.
