Sacramento, CA – Californians should brace for a significant shift in weather patterns as the state prepares for valley rain and mountain snow starting late next week. A developing system could impact travel over the Sierra Nevada while bringing breezy winds and cooler temperatures across the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sacramento, this storm system is expected between December 13 and 15. Moderate to heavy snowfall is likely over the Sierra Nevada crest, which could disrupt travel on mountain passes. Valley residents may see rain showers during this period. Cooler air and frost are forecast earlier in the week, with overnight lows dropping into the mid-30s Monday and Tuesday nights.
Dense fog is also expected overnight tonight, particularly between 1 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday. Motorists should use caution, especially on I-5 and Highway 99, where visibility may be significantly reduced. Daytime highs this weekend will hover in the low 60s, with clear skies dominating Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Looking ahead, Monday and Tuesday will bring sunny skies during the day, followed by overnight frost. Travelers and residents in elevated areas should monitor updates as snowfall intensifies late next week. Be sure to check tire chains and winterize vehicles before heading into mountain regions.
