Sacramento, California – A fast-moving weather system is sliding across Northern California on Wednesday, bringing scattered light rain to the valleys and snow to higher elevations of the Sierra, with minor travel impacts expected later today and into the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, rain will be light and spotty, focused mainly across the foothills and mountain areas, while snow levels hover between about 4,500 and 5,500 feet. Snow accumulations are expected to remain modest, but slick roads are possible on mountain passes during the afternoon and evening hours.

In the Sacramento Valley, including Sacramento, Stockton, and Yuba City, rainfall amounts will be light, generally a few hundredths of an inch, with many locations seeing more clouds than steady rain. Farther east, communities along Highway 50 and Interstate 80 near Placerville, Truckee, and Donner Pass could see brief periods of snow that slow travel, especially during the evening commute.

Drivers heading into the Sierra are urged to watch for changing road conditions and allow extra time. Even light snowfall can create slick spots on untreated roads at elevation.

The system moves out quickly Wednesday night, with no significant impacts expected to linger. Additional updates may be issued if snow levels or impacts change later today.
