Los Angeles, CA – As California heads into Black Friday weekend, weather officials are urging Los Angeles homeowners to complete early-winter preparations ahead of a stretch of cooler nighttime temperatures expected across Southern California.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), La Niña may bring more variable early-season conditions to the state, including sharper nighttime cooldowns even after warm afternoons. Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Anaheim are expected to see nighttime lows fall into the 40s late Friday into Saturday, with inland areas such as Riverside, Ontario, and the San Fernando Valley dipping into the 30s. Meanwhile, higher-elevation communities across the Sierra and northern California could see lows in the teens. These shifts can pose risks of pipe damage, condensation and moisture issues, and heating-system strain, particularly in older homes with minimal insulation.
Home maintenance specialists recommend Los Angeles residents begin with insulating exposed pipes, especially those along exterior walls or in garages — common features in Southern California construction. Clearing gutters is also essential as winter storm systems begin moving into the state, creating risks of pooling water and overnight icing in inland valleys.
Energy experts advise homeowners to check weather stripping, inspect attic insulation, and test heating systems before colder December nights arrive. LA Fire Department officials also emphasize testing carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms, noting that heating-related incidents tend to increase across the region after Thanksgiving.
Northern and Central California residents should prepare for colder, more abrupt temperature drops. NWS urges those in foothill and mountain communities to check well houses, cabin plumbing, and exposed water lines before the Black Friday cooldown arrives.
Emergency managers encourage residents to check on older neighbors or family members who may need help winterizing their homes.
