San Francisco, California – Unseasonable heat surged across the Bay Area on Monday, breaking temperature records in multiple cities and signaling a broader warming trend across California.

According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, several locations set new daily record highs. Redwood City climbed to 83 degrees, surpassing a record set in 1931, while Salinas reached 85 degrees, breaking its 1953 record. Oakland hit 79 degrees, topping a 1984 record, and San Rafael also reached 83 degrees, beating a 2007 mark. Even San Francisco International Airport rose to 76 degrees, exceeding its previous record from 1970.

The warmth was driven by strong high pressure over the West, pushing inland heat toward coastal communities that typically remain cooler this time of year. Areas along Highway 101 and Interstate 880 saw noticeably warmer conditions during the afternoon commute.

While no major impacts were reported, the unusual heat may affect outdoor plans and increase demand for cooling, especially in inland where temperatures climbed fastest.

Above-average warmth is expected to continue through midweek, with additional record highs possible before a gradual cooling trend begins later this week.
