San Diego, CA – A powerful storm system fueled by an atmospheric river is set to bring heavy rain and potential flooding to Southern California starting Thursday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for San Diego, Riverside, and Orange counties, warning of intense rainfall through late Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service, rain will begin early Thursday, with possible thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 35 mph overnight. Some areas could see up to 5 inches of rain, increasing flood risks for low-lying areas, creeks, and roadways. Drivers should exercise caution on I-5, I-15, and Highway 78, where water pooling and debris flows could cause dangerous conditions.

By Friday, rain will taper off to scattered showers, with daytime highs near 61°F. A drier Valentine’s weekend is expected, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-60s.

Residents in flood-prone areas should stay alert for updates, avoid travel during peak storms, and secure outdoor belongings. Emergency alerts and road closure information are available at weather.gov.
