EAST LOS ANGELES, Calif. – A brief return of fall rain could slick Southern California streets early this week, ending the region’s warm, sunny streak just after the Columbus Day holiday. Drivers along I-10 and I-5 should brace for slower commutes Tuesday morning as scattered showers move across Los Angeles County.

According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, increasing clouds will develop through Monday, followed by a 50 to 90 percent chance of showers Tuesday. A few isolated thunderstorms are possible, especially in foothill communities from Pasadena to Glendale. Rainfall totals could range from a quarter to half an inch, enough to cause ponding on urban roadways and delays for early commuters.

South winds gusting up to 20 mph could accompany the front, knocking loose tree branches and making driving tricky for high-profile vehicles. The system will also drop temperatures sharply—Tuesday’s highs will fall into the low 60s, a 10-degree swing from Sunday’s pleasant mid-70s.

Motorists should allow extra travel time, check windshield wipers, and reduce speed on slick pavement. Parents can expect cooler, damp conditions as students return to school following the long holiday weekend. The weather improves midweek, with sun returning by Wednesday and a bright, mild stretch for late-week fall events and pumpkin patch visits.
