Bishop, California – Travel across the Eastern Sierra and White Mountains of Inyo County is expected to remain extremely dangerous through Friday afternoon as a prolonged winter storm continues to deliver heavy snow and strong winds to high elevations.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through Friday afternoon for the White Mountains of Inyo County and the Eastern Sierra Slopes. Snow totals are already significant and will continue to build, with more than two feet of snow expected above 8,000 feet in the White Mountains and over three feet possible above 9,000 feet along the Eastern Sierra Slopes. Gusty winds up to 50 to 55 mph will create blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
Highway 168 through Westgard Pass is expected to see the most severe impacts as snow levels fall toward 6,000 feet. Periods of heavy snow may make travel very difficult to impossible, especially Thursday night into Friday. Roads near Bristlecone Pine, Aspendell, and Whitney Portal are also likely to become snow-covered and hazardous.
At slightly lower elevations, communities above 6,000 feet could still see several inches of accumulation, increasing the risk for slick roads and stranded vehicles. Strong winds may knock down tree branches, adding to travel and power concerns.
Officials strongly discourage non-essential travel through mountain passes during the storm. Drivers who must be on the road should carry emergency supplies and check Caltrans road conditions by calling 1-800-427-7623. Warnings remain in effect through Friday afternoon, and lingering impacts may continue even after snowfall begins to taper.
