EUREKA, Calif. – The Pacific is calm — too calm. Early risers may see a mirror-smooth ocean stretching toward the horizon this morning, but don’t let it fool you. Forecasters warn that dangerous sneaker waves could strike Humboldt and Del Norte beaches through Tuesday afternoon, capable of surging 20 to 25 feet up the sand without warning.

According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through 3 p.m. Tuesday. The greatest risk zones include Samoa Beach, Centerville Beach, and Trinidad State Beach, where powerful surf can sweep people into the water or toss large logs ashore. Residents and visitors are urged to stay off rocks, jetties, and steep beaches. “Never turn your back on the ocean,” officials caution.

Weather-wise, Humboldt County will enjoy mild, bright conditions through midweek. Highs near 70°F Tuesday will dip into the lower 60s by Wednesday as patchy fog forms along the coast. Winds remain light, though a subtle shift westward by Thursday hints at changing weather.

By Friday, a new Pacific system moves inland, bringing steady rain and cooler air across the North Coast. Inland valleys will stay slightly warmer but damp through Saturday, with highs hovering in the low 60s. The weekend looks classically autumnal — misty mornings, breezy afternoons, and fresh rainfall soaking coastal pines.

For now, enjoy the sunshine but treat the coastline with caution. Calm seas can turn dangerous in seconds — and this week, the Pacific is expected to remind Humboldt County exactly who’s in charge.
