San Francisco, CA — Massive waves are slamming Northern California’s coast Thursday night, triggering a high surf advisory that remains in effect until 11 a.m. Friday. Swells between 25 and 30 feet are expected to batter north and west-facing beaches, creating life-threatening surf conditions from Point Reyes to Big Sur.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory covers the San Francisco Peninsula, the Coastal North Bay, and Southern Monterey Bay, including key stretches along Highway 1. Officials warn of strong rip currents, sneaker waves, and the risk of beach erosion. Swimmers, surfers, and beachgoers are urged to stay away from the shoreline during this period.

Local authorities are especially concerned about the risk to inexperienced swimmers and tourists. Waves may surge far beyond the waterline, pulling individuals into dangerous surf or slamming them against rocks and jetties. Residents are advised to avoid coastal trails and keep a safe distance from the surf zone.

Friday’s weather will see clearing skies and mild temperatures, with highs near 60°F and light winds, offering a brief calm after the overnight surf danger.

The weekend forecast looks favorable:

  • Saturday: Mostly sunny, high of 60°F
  • Saturday night: Chance of rain late, low of 49°F
  • Sunday: Cloudy with a high near 62°F and continued rain chances
  • Monday: Rain likely with a high near 60°F
  • Tuesday: Cloudy and cooler, high around 61°F
