San Bernardino, CA – A powerful winter storm is expected to impact the mountains of Southern California, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds from Wednesday evening through Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in San Diego, snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are possible above 5,000 feet in the San Bernardino and Riverside County mountains, with higher elevations above 7,000 feet seeing up to 24 inches. The San Diego County mountains are also expected to receive 3 to 7 inches of snow. Winds could gust as high as 75 mph, especially along the desert slopes, creating dangerous travel conditions.

Snow levels will start around 7,500 feet on Wednesday afternoon, gradually dropping to 4,000 to 4,500 feet by Thursday morning. The hazardous conditions are likely to impact Thursday’s morning and evening commutes, with roads, bridges, and overpasses becoming slick and hazardous. Blowing snow may also reduce visibility below a quarter mile in some areas.

Residents and travelers are urged to prepare for possible road closures, reduced visibility, and tree damage due to strong winds. Those planning travel through affected mountain passes should monitor weather updates and consider postponing trips until conditions improve.

The NWS advises residents to stay informed by checking weather forecasts and road conditions frequently. Emergency preparedness, including stocking up on essentials and ensuring vehicles are winter-ready, is recommended for those in higher elevations.
