Tehachapi, California – Travel through one of California’s busiest mountain corridors could become dangerous starting Wednesday night as a powerful wind event targets the Tehachapi region, the Grapevine, and nearby desert slopes.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a High Wind Warning is in effect from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening for the Tehachapi area, Frazier Mountain communities, the Grapevine, and Mojave Desert slopes. Northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph, strong enough to down trees and power lines.
The most significant impacts are expected along Interstate 5 through the Grapevine, Highway 58 near Tehachapi, and exposed mountain passes near Lebec, Frazier Park, and Mojave. High-profile vehicles such as semi-trucks, RVs, and trailers could struggle to maintain control, and temporary travel restrictions are possible if winds intensify.
Residents should also prepare for widespread power outages as strong gusts stress infrastructure across higher elevations. Loose outdoor objects may become airborne, and falling tree limbs could pose additional hazards near homes and roadways.
Drivers are urged to delay non-essential travel through mountain passes, especially overnight and Thursday, when winds may peak. Officials recommend staying in lower levels of homes during the windstorm and avoiding windows. The strongest winds are expected to ease Thursday evening, though lingering gusts could continue beyond the warning period.
