Tehachapi, California – Snow and 45 mph wind gusts are creating slick, low-visibility conditions across Kern County’s mountain passes early Friday, threatening the morning commute before 7 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Friday for the Tehachapi area, Frazier Mountain Communities, Piute Walker Basin and the Grapevine. Additional snowfall of up to 3 inches is possible in Tehachapi and Frazier Park, while the Grapevine could see up to 1 inch. Winds may gust as high as 45 mph in exposed areas.

Drivers along Interstate 5 over the Grapevine and Highway 58 near Tehachapi are likely to encounter slick pavement, especially on bridges and elevated stretches. Blowing snow may briefly reduce visibility, and gusty winds could snap small tree branches. Caltrans crews are monitoring conditions and could implement traffic controls if snow intensifies.

Motorists should slow down, increase following distance and carry emergency supplies if traveling overnight or before sunrise. Road conditions are available statewide by calling 511.

Snow should taper toward sunrise, but icy patches may linger into the early commute. Additional travel advisories could be issued if conditions worsen before daybreak.
