Grapevine, California – Drivers along Interstate 5 over the Grapevine could encounter slick pavement and gusty crosswinds as early as the Monday evening commute, with light snow possible near Tejon Pass by Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Monday afternoon through Thursday morning. Snow levels are expected to fall below Tejon Pass on Tuesday, with total accumulations of 1 to 2 inches possible. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, creating blowing snow and reduced visibility at higher elevations.
The Grapevine corridor, including Lebec and the Tejon Pass summit, is particularly vulnerable. Even light wet snow can create hazardous travel on the steep grades of I-5, a critical north-south artery connecting the Central Valley and Southern California. Caltrans crews may conduct chain controls or temporary traffic holds if conditions deteriorate.
Motorists planning travel through the pass should check road conditions before departure, allow extra time and secure loose items due to strong winds. Conditions may fluctuate through midweek, and additional advisories could be issued as colder air settles into the region. The watch remains in place through Thursday morning.
