Plumas County, CA – A reported vehicle accident near Rich Bar in the Feather River Canyon drew a major emergency response today, as crews faced hazardous terrain to reach the crash site and recover victims.

According to the Plumas County Search and Rescue (SAR) team, the incident was reported early Monday near a remote section of Feather River Canyon. Multiple agencies, including Plumas District Hospital, several medical helicopters, the California Highway Patrol, Quincy Fire Department, and a Plumas County Sheriff’s deputy, all responded to the scene.

SAR officials said the accident site was difficult to reach, located beyond a locked gate and up a four-wheel-drive-only road. While en route, SAR personnel encountered the children’s father, who had managed to extract his two injured children from the canyon and was driving them to meet emergency medical services. He reportedly told responders that the vehicle had left the roadway and that his father—the children’s grandfather—was still missing near the crash location.

Rescue teams continued up the mountain and found the vehicle roughly 250 feet down a 55-degree slope, where it had rolled and come to rest upside down. The passenger compartment was completely crushed and the truck was held in place by its lumber rack. SAR personnel rappelled down the steep slope, using chains and straps to secure the truck. Assisted by Quincy Fire and specialized tools, the team reached the wreckage and located the third occupant, who allegedly did not survive the crash.

California Highway Patrol’s air operations from Auburn aided in hoisting the victim up to the roadway. According to SAR, the operation took nearly six hours, involving complex coordination and technical rescue skills across multiple agencies.

Authorities have not released the names of those involved. The family is receiving support, and agencies thanked all responders for their dedication.
