Eureka, California – A tsunami advisory remains in effect Wednesday evening for Northern California’s coast from the Humboldt/Del Norte line to the Oregon border, following a powerful offshore earthquake in the northwest Pacific.

According to the National Tsunami Warning Center, the advisory was triggered by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck at 4:25 p.m. PDT Tuesday, roughly 80 miles southeast of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka. The quake has generated tsunami activity capable of producing strong and hazardous currents along harbors, beaches, and marinas.

Communities including Crescent City, Klamath, and Trinidad are urged to stay off beaches, piers, and docks. While no widespread flooding is expected, officials stress that wave surges can persist for hours and may be stronger than the initial arrival. The first wave is not always the largest.

Emergency services are on alert, and coastal access may be restricted through the evening. Boaters should avoid launching from affected ports. Residents should monitor local alerts and visit tsunami.gov for real-time updates.

The advisory will remain in effect until further notice. Additional updates may follow as wave activity continues to be monitored.
