Crescent City, California – Coastal communities from the Humboldt/Del Norte line to the Oregon border remain under a tsunami advisory tonight, with authorities warning of dangerous waves and strong currents following a massive offshore earthquake.

According to the National Tsunami Warning Center, the advisory was issued after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck 80 miles southeast of Petropavlovsk Kamchatka at 4:25 p.m. PDT on July 29. While widespread coastal flooding is not expected, residents and visitors are urged to stay off beaches, avoid harbors and marinas, and remain vigilant through Thursday morning.

Local impacts are most severe in Del Norte and Humboldt counties, including Crescent City and nearby coastal towns. Strong and unpredictable currents may threaten anyone in or near the water, and the first wave is rarely the largest. Tsunami waves can continue for hours after the initial arrival, making lingering onshore or nearshore especially risky.

Authorities advise charging mobile devices, monitoring local alerts, and preparing to move quickly if evacuation orders are issued. Harbormasters and law enforcement are patrolling key areas, including Highway 101 and harbor districts, for public safety.

The tsunami advisory remains in effect until further notice. Additional updates and official guidance will be posted on tsunami.gov and local emergency channels as conditions evolve overnight.
