Hanford, California — Thunderstorms are set to affect parts of the high Sierra this afternoon, with a 10-20% chance of strong storms developing in Fresno and Tulare counties. Localized thunderstorms could bring small hail, erratic winds, and cloud-to-ground lightning between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. PDT, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS issued a severe weather outlook for areas of high elevation, including Sequoia National Park and Mammoth Lakes. Though only a slight risk of severe storms exists, the public is advised to stay alert for any rapid weather changes.

Impacts are most likely in the mountainous areas but may extend to nearby foothills and valleys. With gusty winds and frequent lightning expected, drivers and outdoor enthusiasts in affected areas should avoid being outside during storm development. It is especially crucial to stay indoors if thunder is heard or lightning is seen. The NWS recommends waiting at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming outdoor activities.

The severe weather threat will taper off after 8 p.m. tonight, but residents should remain cautious as storms develop. Further advisories could be issued depending on how conditions evolve.
