Eureka, CA – Beachgoers in Northern California face a dangerous Sunday evening as sneaker waves threaten the coast from Del Norte to Mendocino. The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement warning that powerful, unexpected waves could sweep people into the ocean without warning through 8 p.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service Eureka office, the warning applies to the Northern and Southwestern Humboldt County Coast, as well as Del Norte and Mendocino Counties. The alert began early Sunday and will remain active through the evening. These sneaker waves, capable of moving logs and debris, present significant threats to those on rocks, jetties, or near the surf line.

Residents and visitors should avoid beaches, keep a safe distance from the shoreline, and never turn their backs on the ocean. Calm conditions can quickly become dangerous, and there may be up to 30 minutes of small waves before a sneaker wave strikes.

Looking ahead, Monday through Friday brings more stable weather to the Eureka area. Monday will be partly sunny, with highs near 61°F and patchy fog returning overnight. Tuesday continues the spring trend with sunshine and highs again in the low 60s. Fog remains a factor overnight through midweek. Rain returns Wednesday with a high near 63°F, followed by more showers on Thursday and a chance of rain on Friday.

Travelers on U.S. Route 101, which runs along the coastline, should remain cautious and aware of changing conditions. Coastal drivers are urged to use extra caution when visibility drops due to fog or rain, especially near the bluffs and beach access roads.

Stay updated with the National Weather Service and prepare for sudden coastal changes as Northern California spring weather unfolds this week.
