Hanford, CA – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Sierra Nevada high country through 10 a.m. Friday, with heavy snow expected across Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon, and surrounding elevations above 8,000 feet. The storm could significantly impact outdoor travel and early morning commutes.
According to the National Weather Service, 6–12 inches of snow are likely today and tonight, with the highest elevations potentially reaching 18 inches. Wind gusts may approach 40 mph at ridge level, further reducing visibility and making mountain travel hazardous.
The warning covers a broad stretch of central California’s high terrain, including Shaver Lake, Lake Thomas Edison, Lake Wishon, Cedar Grove, Tuolumne Meadows, Giant Forest, Huntington Lake, Wawona, and Hume Lake. Forecasters note that roads—especially bridges and overpasses—will likely become slick, with rapidly changing conditions after sunset.
Travel impacts are expected to continue through the Thursday evening and Friday morning commute windows. Drivers headed toward the Sierra are urged to carry emergency supplies, including extra food, water, and a flashlight. Tire chains may become necessary on higher-elevation routes, and visibility may drop quickly in heavier bands of snow.
Officials recommend delaying travel when possible. Those who must drive in the Sierra should slow down, increase following distances, and be prepared for sudden snow-covered stretches and icy spots, particularly on curves, hills, and shaded areas.
