Sacramento, CA – Drivers heading into the Sierra Nevada this weekend may encounter light but travel-impacting snow, with up to 3 inches possible across higher elevations through early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.
The weather system, which moved into Northern California on Saturday afternoon, is expected to continue producing mountain snow and lower-elevation rain through Sunday morning. According to the NWS, totals around 2–3 inches are likely at Donner Peak, Echo Summit, and nearby high-elevation corridors, while surrounding areas may see only dustings.
Forecasters said snow levels will remain high, between 9,000 and 9,500 feet Saturday, before dropping to 7,000–7,500 feet Sunday morning, increasing the chance for slick roads on popular mountain routes. The NWS cautioned that even small accumulations can create hazardous conditions, especially during early-season events when motorists are still adjusting to winter driving.
According to the NWS, the overall impact category for this system remains “minor,” but travel slowdowns, brief chain controls, and reduced visibility are possible on U.S. 50, I-80, and nearby passes. Drivers are urged to monitor Caltrans QuickMap for updated road conditions throughout the weekend.
Forecasters also noted another system may bring renewed chances for rain and mountain snow late Sunday into Monday, though additional details will depend on how quickly the next disturbance develops offshore.
