Yreka, California – Wildfire risk will spike across Siskiyou County beginning Monday afternoon, as dry lightning and strong outflow winds move into the region, triggering a Red Flag Warning from 2 to 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, critical fire weather conditions will impact Western Klamath National Forest, Shasta Valley, and areas surrounding Mount Shasta. A Fire Weather Watch is also in place for Tuesday afternoon and evening as thunderstorms, some dry, are expected to redevelop.

Isolated to scattered thunderstorms Monday could ignite new fires on parched terrain, with gusts up to 35 mph capable of spreading flames rapidly. Outflow winds may carry fire conditions as far as 50 miles from the storm cell.

Residents near Highway 97, Interstate 5, and the town of Weed should remain alert and avoid outdoor activities that could spark ignition. Emergency officials urge residents to pack go-kits now and check local fire restrictions.

Lightning strikes outside rain cores—also known as dry lightning—are a particular concern both days. Conditions may worsen quickly.

Red Flag conditions will persist into early evening Monday, with another round possible Tuesday. More warnings may be issued.
