Hanford, California – Thunderstorms could bring pockets of heavy rain and minor flooding to the Sierra Nevada and parts of eastern Kern County through Wednesday, with travel delays and outdoor disruptions expected in higher elevations.

According to the Weather Prediction Center, a Marginal Risk (5–15%) for excessive rainfall is in effect for the Sierra Nevada range, as well as the mountains and desert areas of Kern County, from Tuesday into Wednesday. A 10–25% chance of thunderstorms is also in the forecast, especially during peak heating hours each afternoon.

Communities including Lake Isabella, Tehachapi, and Ridgecrest may see isolated downpours that could overwhelm dry creek beds or trigger minor flash flooding on steep terrain. Lightning and brief gusty winds may also accompany stronger cells.

Residents and travelers are urged to stay weather-aware and avoid hiking or driving in flood-prone areas during the afternoon and early evening hours. Dry washes, arroyos, and wildfire burn scars may respond quickly to even brief rainfall.

Rain chances will taper by Wednesday evening, but additional updates from the NWS may follow depending on thunderstorm development.
