Berkeley, CA – A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck just east of California Memorial Stadium Thursday afternoon, briefly rattling the UC Berkeley campus where thousands of students and visitors were gathered, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the California Integrated Seismic Network, the quake occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) at 9:23 a.m. local time (16:23 UTC). The epicenter was roughly 2 kilometers east of downtown Berkeley, near the Hayward Fault Zone.

More than 2,000 people reported feeling the tremor, describing a short, sharp jolt lasting only seconds. The quake registered Intensity III (light shaking) on the community intensity map, with minor vibrations reported across Berkeley, Oakland, and the East Bay hills.

There were no reports of injuries or damage, though some campus activities paused briefly as alerts circulated. Seismologists say such small quakes are typical along the Hayward Fault, which runs directly beneath parts of the university.
