California: Overnight, Five Earthquakes Hit Community

Petrolia, CA – Overnight, five earthquakes rattled Northern California, striking the area near Petrolia and Eureka. The strongest quake registered a magnitude of 4.4, with several aftershocks also exceeding 4.0.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the first earthquake hit at 12:18 a.m. Pacific time, followed by the largest at 12:58 a.m. All of the quakes were centered 3 to 5 kilometers south of Petrolia, with depths between 7 and 10 kilometers. While the tremors were widely felt across Humboldt County, no major damage has been reported.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Eureka, there is no tsunami threat from the earthquakes. Residents are being asked to report any shaking they felt to the USGS as part of continued monitoring efforts.

Northern California frequently experiences seismic activity, and these overnight quakes serve as a reminder for the public to stay prepared. While aftershocks may continue, no immediate further seismic risk is anticipated.
