MEDFORD, Ore. – A round of isolated to scattered thunderstorms is expected to develop across southern Oregon and far northern California this afternoon and evening, bringing the chance of brief downpours, gusty winds, and small hail. The National Weather Service in Medford says most of the storms will form just inland from the coast and over the coastal waters but could drift as far east as Highway 97, southern Klamath County, and western Modoc County.

According to the NWS Medford office, storms will persist through this evening, with the strongest cells capable of producing wind gusts up to 40 mph, lightning strikes, and bursts of heavy rain. A few storms may also generate small hail. Forecasters noted a low (<5%) chance of waterspouts over the coastal waters near Brookings and Coos Bay.

Drivers along I-5, U.S. 97, and U.S. 199 should remain alert for wet roads, sudden visibility drops, and lightning. Outdoor recreationists in the Cascades and along the Rogue Valley foothills are urged to move indoors immediately if thunder is heard.

While severe weather is not expected to be widespread, any thunderstorm could briefly impact power or travel. Conditions will quiet down late tonight as the system moves east and drier air returns Thursday.
