Medford, OR – The National Weather Service in Medford is warning residents across southern Oregon and northern California to brace for a major pattern shift beginning Friday, Oct. 24, that could bring a mix of strong winds, heavy rain, and accumulating mountain snow through Monday, Oct. 27.
According to the NWS, gusty winds are expected along the Oregon Coast, in the Shasta Valley, and east of the Cascades, where high-profile vehicles may face hazardous crosswinds. Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall could also reduce visibility and lead to localized urban flooding, especially in areas with poor drainage.
Forecasters say snowfall over the Cascades could make travel through mountain passes dangerous, with icy conditions possible overnight. By Saturday night into Monday, temperatures east of the Cascades could drop into the low 20s, raising risks of frozen pipes and impacts to pets and livestock.
Drivers are advised to monitor forecasts closely, check for chain requirements, and delay mountain travel if possible. Residents should also secure outdoor items, insulate pipes, and plan for potential freezing overnight conditions.
