EUREKA, Calif. — U.S. West Coast officials confirmed no tsunami threat exists for California, Oregon, or Washington following a powerful series of earthquakes in the southern Philippines.
According to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, the 7.4-magnitude quake off Mindanao generated no Pacific-wide tsunami. Statements were issued as a precaution but quickly canceled once wave data showed minimal displacement.
“Based on historic and real-time modeling, this event is not expected to affect the U.S. West Coast,” the agency said. Coastal monitoring networks in Crescent City, Astoria, and Long Beach reported no abnormal readings.
Experts noted that the Philippine Trench, where the quake occurred, is a major subduction zone capable of producing regionally destructive tsunamis. Still, the depth and inland-angled rupture limited wave potential.
Emergency management officials remind residents that even distant Pacific events can generate strong currents in harbors and advise following NOAA Marine Weather updates.
