South Lake Tahoe, CA — A powerful winter storm is set to dump feet of snow and bring damaging winds to the Sierra region through Tuesday, making travel in the Greater Lake Tahoe Area and northeastern California treacherous.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Monday for areas above 5500 feet in Lassen, Eastern Plumas, and Eastern Sierra counties, including cities like Susanville, Portola, and Westwood. Snowfall totals may reach 20 inches, with winds gusting to 60 mph.

For the Lake Tahoe region, snow totals could exceed 3 feet at elevations above 6500 feet. Gusts along ridges may peak at 100 mph, with whiteout conditions possible on mountain roads. A Winter Weather Advisory begins 5 a.m. Tuesday through 11 p.m. for continued snowfall up to 15 inches in higher elevations.

Drivers are urged to avoid mountain travel. If necessary, carry emergency supplies and check conditions by calling 511. Power outages and downed trees are possible due to high winds.

This storm marks one of the more intense late-season events for the region, with impacts expected across commutes, outdoor activities, and regional highways like U.S. 395.
