Reno, NV – Strong winds are expected to impact western Nevada and northeastern California through Thursday evening, bringing hazardous conditions to popular lakes and mountain regions.
According to the National Weather Service Reno, a Lake Wind Advisory and High Wind Watch are both in effect. The Lake Wind Advisory covers the Greater Lake Tahoe Area from 2 p.m. Wednesday to 8 p.m. Thursday, with southwest winds ranging from 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. Wave heights could reach up to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe, posing risks to small boats, kayaks and paddle boards.
Simultaneously, a High Wind Watch is active Thursday morning through Thursday evening for areas including Reno, Pyramid Lake, and northeastern California. Gusts could reach 60 mph in wind-prone zones, with even higher localized gusts above 65 mph. Pyramid Lake may see wave heights up to 5 feet.
Residents and visitors are urged to secure outdoor items and postpone boating activities until conditions improve. Travel for high-profile vehicles could be difficult, and blowing dust may reduce visibility near deserts and playas.
Authorities advise checking conditions before venturing outdoors and ensuring emergency kits are stocked in the event of power outages or downed trees.
