Los Angeles, CA – Drivers across California and Nevada are being urged to prepare today as forecasters warn that fast-moving snow squalls could develop this season, especially in higher elevations and desert corridors. The bursts may affect travel between Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Reno, and along key Sierra routes including I-80, US-395, and mountain passes across central and northern California.

Snow squalls typically last under an hour but can create conditions as dangerous as major winter storms. Sudden visibility loss combined with flash freezing can quickly make mountain highways and desert passes slick, leading to multi-vehicle crashes in past events across Donner Pass, the Grapevine, US-93, and I-15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Officials stress that avoiding travel during a Snow Squall Warning is the safest choice. As meteorologists often warn: “You don’t want to be on the road when it happens.”

If a squall hits while you’re already driving, experts recommend slowing down gradually, turning on hazard lights, and widening following distance. Drivers should avoid sudden braking, stay in their lane, and never stop in a travel lane where visibility may drop to near zero. Safe pull-offs—such as rest stops, exits, or parking lots—are the best places to wait until conditions improve.

Residents heading toward mountain resorts, desert highways, or holiday travel routes should carry winter emergency kits, including blankets, chargers, water, scrapers, and traction materials like sand or cat litter. High winds may accompany squalls, so outdoor items should be secured at home.
