Reno, NV – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area from 10 p.m. Saturday through 4 p.m. Monday, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning of significant snowfall in the higher elevations and hazardous travel conditions across the Sierra.
According to NWS Reno, elevations above 7,000 feet are expected to see 10 to 16 inches of snow, with Donner Pass forecast to receive 8 to 12 inches over the duration of the storm. At lake level, precipitation will begin as rain tonight before transitioning to a rain–snow mix early Sunday morning and through Sunday afternoon. Snow accumulation around Lake Tahoe is expected to stay light, generally an inch or less.
Strong ridge-top winds are also expected, with gusts up to 50 mph, and gusts of 25–30 mph across the Tahoe Basin. These winds will create choppy lake conditions and could down tree branches in exposed areas.
Travelers should prepare for very difficult to potentially impossible driving conditions, especially across high Sierra routes. Chain controls and delays are likely, and Monday morning commuters may encounter slick or snow-covered roads. Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards should remain off Lake Tahoe due to the risk of capsizing in rough waters.
The advisory covers communities including Tahoe City, South Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Truckee, Stateline, Glenbrook, and Markleeville.
NWS urges motorists to slow down, allow extra travel time, and monitor 511 for the latest road conditions in both California and Nevada. Additional updates will be issued as the storm progresses.
