Reno, Nev. – Residents across western Nevada and parts of northeast California face dangerous fire weather and disruptive winds Friday, with red flag warnings and wind advisories active until late tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 12 a.m. Saturday for western Nevada, eastern Lassen County, and Alpine and Mono Counties in California. Winds out of the southwest could gust up to 50 mph, especially in wind-prone areas. Combined with humidity levels between 5–15%, fire conditions are labeled major (risk level 4/5) with rapid spread potential.
At the same time, a Wind Advisory runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday for the Tahoe Basin, northeast California, and the NV Basin and Range. Areas above 7,000 feet—including the Sierra Front and mountain passes—may see gusts up to 49 mph. Drivers should watch for blowing dust, choppy lake waters, and turbulence affecting high-profile vehicles and flights.
Outdoor activities like target shooting, trailer towing, and driving on dry grass should be avoided to prevent ignition.
Winds are expected to ease overnight, but new advisories may follow depending on Saturday’s conditions.
