San Bernardino, CA – Drivers heading into the Riverside and San Bernardino County mountains today are being advised to prepare for dangerous travel conditions as heavy wet snow continues to fall above 6,500 feet through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday, with an additional 3 to 6 inches of snow expected across higher elevations, including Big Bear Lake and Big Bear City. Forecasters said winds may gust up to 35 mph, creating periods of reduced visibility and slick, icy roads.

The storm is expected to have its greatest impact from Friday evening through early Saturday, potentially complicating travel for residents, tourists, and workers commuting to mountain communities. According to forecasters, the wet nature of the snow could make conditions especially hazardous for vehicles not equipped with chains or snow-rated tires.

Road conditions across mountain routes—including Highway 18, Highway 38, and Highway 330—may deteriorate rapidly as snow continues overnight. Officials urge motorists to check 511 for the latest closures and delays before attempting to drive into higher elevations.

The National Weather Service warns that anyone who must travel should carry extra food, water, and a flashlight in case of an emergency. Visibility is expected to fluctuate, with brief whiteout conditions possible as wind-driven snow moves across ridgelines and passes.

Those without essential travel plans are being urged to delay trips until conditions improve late Saturday morning, when snowfall is expected to taper off.
