Boston, MA – Federal regulators have expanded a nationwide frozen shrimp recall now affecting at least 15 states, including California, Massachusetts, Alabama, and Missouri, due to potential radioactive contamination tied to imported products.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Southwind Foods, LLC has recalled various cooked and raw shrimp products sold under Great Value, Aqua Star, BMS, 365, and several private-label brands. The products were distributed to major retailers, including Walmart, between July 17 and August 8, 2025.

Newly released product photos show packaging for salad shrimp, cooked shrimp meat, and raw tail-on varieties, helping consumers identify impacted lots more easily. States affected include AL, AR, CA, FL, GA, KY, LA, MA, MN, MO, MS, OH, OK, PA, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WV.

According to the FDA, the shrimp in question was processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati of Indonesia, operating as BMS Foods. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) first detected Cesium-137 — a radioactive isotope — in several shipments during port inspections in Los Angeles, Miami, Savannah, and Houston.

Though Cs-137 levels detected were below federal safety thresholds, the FDA urges consumers not to eat or serve any affected shrimp products as a precaution. All shrimp tied to the impacted lots — many with best-by dates of March 15, 2027 — should be discarded immediately.

The FDA has issued Import Alert #99-51 to block future shipments from the Indonesian supplier until the source of contamination is fully resolved. Investigations remain active and additional updates are expected.
