Santa Barbara, CA – Boaters along the Central California coast are urged to take precautions today as hazardous marine conditions intensify near the Santa Barbara Channel and offshore waters.
According to the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard office, a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect until 2 p.m. Friday, followed by a Gale Warning lasting through 3 a.m. Saturday. Forecasters warn that northwest winds will strengthen to 20 to 25 knots, with gusts reaching up to 40 knots, while combined seas could build between 8 and 11 feet.
The warnings cover waters from Point Sal to Santa Cruz Island, including the offshore zones near San Miguel and Santa Rosa Islands, extending up to 60 nautical miles westward. Officials caution that the dangerous conditions could capsize or damage both small and large vessels.
The NWS advises mariners to alter plans, remain in port, or seek safe harbor if already at sea. “Strong winds will create dangerous sea conditions which could capsize or damage small and large vessels,” the advisory states.
These warnings come as seasonal wind patterns intensify along the Central Coast, a common occurrence in early fall that can create sudden, hazardous conditions for boaters and commercial vessels.
The Coastal Waters Forecast (CWFLOX) offers additional details on timing and impacts. Boaters are urged to monitor marine radio, weather apps, and Coast Guard updates before heading out.
