Point Arena, California – Gale-force winds are already building offshore tonight, with conditions turning dangerous fast as 30 to 40 knot winds and steep seas up to 16 feet threaten vessels west of the Northern California coast.
According to the National Weather Service, a Gale Warning is in effect for waters between 60 and 150 nautical miles offshore from Point Arena to Pigeon Point. Winds will remain at 30 to 40 knots through Thursday, with seas building from 10 to 14 feet overnight to as high as 16 feet by Thursday afternoon as a coastal trough strengthens.
The most hazardous conditions will impact key offshore routes west of San Francisco and along shipping lanes extending toward Monterey Bay. Steep, wind-driven waves combined with strong north winds will create unstable navigation conditions, especially for smaller vessels. Even larger ships could encounter significant turbulence and course challenges.
Conditions begin to slowly ease Thursday night into Friday, but winds will remain elevated at 20 to 30 knots with seas still reaching 9 to 13 feet. Mariners should avoid offshore travel, secure vessels, and monitor updates closely. While improvement is expected by late weekend, hazardous seas may persist through Saturday before calmer conditions return early next week.
