According to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, shortly after 2 p.m. Deputies allege that Robert Wahlberg, 60, of Beckwourth, California, escaped from custody while being loaded for transport back to the Plumas County Correctional Facility following court proceedings. Wahlberg reportedly ran from the rear of the courthouse and headed west toward Dame Shirley Plaza.

Law enforcement officials said a Correctional Officer immediately pursued the inmate on foot. During the pursuit, an off-duty Sheriff’s Court Security Officer, who happened to be in the area on an unrelated assignment, observed the escape and quickly intervened. Authorities credited the swift and decisive actions of the off-duty officer with helping to safely apprehend Wahlberg without further incident.
