Sacramento, CA – Residents across central and northern California valley regions are urged to prepare for cold overnight conditions as the National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. PST Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, overnight temperatures are expected to dip to between 33 and 36 degrees, creating conditions favorable for frost formation. The advisory applies to elevations below 2,000 feet across the Central and Southern Sacramento Valley, Northern San Joaquin Valley, Carquinez Strait and Delta, and parts of the Motherlode.

Cities and communities impacted include Sacramento, Marysville, Yuba City, Fairfield, Suisun City, Stockton, Modesto, Chico, Oroville, Jackson, and Grass Valley. These areas may experience frost during the early morning hours, particularly in sheltered and low-lying locations.

Forecasters note that frost development could be limited in some areas due to northerly winds along and west of Interstate 5 or where fog forms early overnight, but conditions remain cold enough to pose a risk to sensitive vegetation.

The primary concern is damage to outdoor plants and crops, especially those not acclimated to colder temperatures. Sensitive plants may be harmed or killed if left uncovered during the advisory period.

Residents are advised to take precautions now, including covering tender plants, bringing potted plants indoors if possible, and ensuring irrigation systems are protected from cold exposure.

While this is not expected to be a hard freeze, officials emphasize that even light frost can cause damage during the winter growing season. Drivers in rural areas should also be alert for patchy fog combined with cold temperatures during the early morning commute.
